The Giant Crystal Cave of Mexico

Deep below the surface, a glittering cavern holds some of the largest crystals ever found.

In the sweltering heart of northern Mexico, beneath the quiet mining town of Naica, lies a place so spectacular it seems like science fiction. Known as the Cave of the Crystals (Cueva de los Cristales), this underground marvel contains massive selenite crystals—some over 30 feet long and weighing more than 50 tons.

The cave was discovered in 2000 by miners drilling in the Naica lead and silver mine. Sealed off for millennia, the cavern had remained untouched, allowing the crystals to grow undisturbed in mineral-rich, superheated waters. Inside, the environment is intense: temperatures soar to 136°F (58°C) with humidity levels close to 100%.
