The Man Who Disappeared Searching for a Lost City

He set off in search of a mysterious civilization... and vanished into legend.

In 1925, British explorer Percy Fawcett entered the Amazon rainforest with two companions, a compass, and an obsession: to find a lost ancient city he called Z—a place he believed held evidence of an advanced civilization deep within the jungle.

They were never seen again…

A Man of Maps and Mysteries

Fawcett wasn’t a reckless adventurer.

He had served as a British army officer, trained in topographical surveying, and earned respect for his methodical expeditions throughout South America. He had already mapped large portions of the Amazon, often venturing where few outsiders dared to go.

But the idea of a ruined city hidden in the forest consumed him.

One of the documents that fueled his obsession was a mysterious 18th-century manuscript known as Manuscript 512, discovered in the archives of the National Library of Brazil. The account described a ruined city deep in the jungle, with wide stone roads, tall arches, and inscriptions—clues that suggested the existence of an unknown ancient civilization.

Fawcett believed that Z was real... and that it would rewrite the known history of the Americas.
