The Ship Hidden Under a Norwegian Farm

In 2018, archaeologists scanning farmland in southeastern Norway noticed something strange beneath the soil.

They were using ground-penetrating radar to map ancient structures near the town of Gjellestad when a long, curved shape appeared on the screen.

The outline looked unmistakable.

It was the shape of a Viking ship.

What made the discovery extraordinary was its location. Viking ship burials are incredibly rare, and most were discovered more than a century ago. Many archaeologists believed that all major examples had already been found.

But beneath this ordinary farm field lay a completely unknown burial.
