In the mid-1800s, when Victorian women were expected to stay home, wear lace, and say little, Alexandrine Tinné chose a different path.
She was a Dutch aristocrat with a taste for languages, science, and travel—and by her twenties, she had become the first European woman to attempt a full crossing of the Sahara.
An Unlikely Explorer
Born in 1835 to a wealthy family in The Hague, Alexandrine lost her father young and inherited a fortune.

Instead of settling into a life of ease, she set her sights on North Africa.
With her mother and aunt in tow, she traveled through Egypt, then up the Nile and deep into Sudan, collecting botanical and ethnographic data along the way.
Her travels were meticulous, dangerous, and groundbreaking. In a time when even male explorers faced intense risk, Alexandrine’s journeys shocked European society.
She wasn’t just a traveler… she was a scientist, writing detailed notes and assembling a collection of plant specimens now held in museums.

With a caravan of guides and camels, she pushed through the Libyan desert.
But she would never return. In southern Libya, near Murzuq, Alexandrine was ambushed and killed—likely the target of political unrest or robbery. She was just 33 years old.
A Legacy in the Dust
Alexandrine Tinné’s story was nearly forgotten—overshadowed by her male contemporaries and buried under colonial-era politics.

But today, historians recognize her as one of the boldest explorers of her time. Her scientific contributions, travel writings, and fearless curiosity stand as a powerful record of a woman who dared to defy the path laid out for her.
She didn’t just go where women hadn’t gone… she did what few dared to imagine.
