For most visitors, the Eiffel Tower is an iconic landmark to admire from below or view Paris from above.
But hidden among its iron lattice is a secret that few people know about: a private apartment built by the tower’s creator, Gustave Eiffel himself.
A Room Above Paris
In 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was completed, Gustave Eiffel included a small but elegantly furnished apartment on the third level—nearly 1,000 feet above the city.
Unlike the tower’s industrial iron framework, the apartment was warm and inviting, featuring wallpapered walls, wooden furniture, and even a piano. It was a stark contrast to the rest of the structure, designed as a peaceful retreat above the bustling city below.

An Exclusive Guest List
Eiffel never lived in the apartment full-time but used it as a private sanctuary and a space to entertain special guests.
One of his most famous visitors was none other than Thomas Edison, who reportedly demonstrated his phonograph there.
While many high-profile figures of the time begged Eiffel to rent out the space, he refused—preferring to keep his hideaway for himself.
